St. Martha
St. Martha lived in the time of Jesus and is the sister of Mary Magdalene and Lazarus (whom Jesus raised from the dead in John 11.) Martha had a very close friendship with Jesus. Jesus was a guest in Martha’s home on at least 3 occasions. She valued hospitality. During one visit from Jesus and his disciples, Mary sits at the feet of Jesus instead of helping Martha serving. Instead of asking Mary to help, she seeks intervention through Jesus. He (as most of us know) tells Martha it is more important that Mary sits with Him.
During a later visit, Martha redeems herself. Grieving the death of her brother Lazarus with a house full of mourners, Martha hears Jesus coming and leaves her company to be with Him.
Martha is known for staying in the background, serving quietly and humbly. Her feast day is July 29. She is the patron on cooks and servants.
